Kapok - a natural fiber that has been tried and tested for thousands of years
Naturally silky and elastic, kapok has been used for seat cushions for thousands of years and is probably the most traditional filling for meditation cushions.
Kapok is obtained from the 15 cm long fruit capsules of the kapok tree, which grows mainly in Asia, especially in Thailand and Indonesia.
Kapok feels similar to cotton but is a bit firmer as a filling, but is still very soft, cuddly and extremely light. The natural bitter substances in kapok have an antibacterial and antimicrobial effect, which prevents moth and mite infestation. Kapok is also recommended for people with animal hair allergies.
Ecologically sustainable raw material
The kapok fiber is a renewable raw material, most kapok trees are wild, so they are not grown in plantations or monocultures. No fertilizers or sprays are used. No chemical processing is required for further processing either.
Spelled husks or kapok?
Compared to filling with spelled husks, a kapok pillow is slightly lighter and softer. However, it is very difficult to adjust and replace the fill level of a kapok pillow. The material also does not adapt very well to the body and the individual seating position. Compared to spelled husks, which are a by-product of grain processing, kapok is of course a bit more expensive as a filling.
Which filling you prefer is ultimately a matter of habit and taste.
In our shop we of course offer pillows with both types of filling, for example our brand new Zafu with a pure kapok filling.
